Soldier Night Vision Goggles & Thermal Imaging Rifle Scopes
The modern soldier must be equipped with the latest technology in order to survive in today’s battlespace. The most advanced night vision systems allow ground superiority for soldiers.
Due to the size/volumes of these night vision googles and rifle scopes they generally do not use desiccant or desiccators inside. In order to maintain and prevent moisture problems, these devices are dry gas purged, typically with Nitrogen, using various types of purging equipment.
It is recommended to initially pull a vacuum to take out the moisture that is present within the free air volume of the googles/sights. Then back fill the free air volume with dry nitrogen at -60 dewpoint or better.
It is important to remember that although you can purchase dry nitrogen to a set dewpoint, you should check the dewpoint is correct as although it will be bottled at the specified dewpoint, if the bottles have not been flushed correctly, they can contain moisture and thus end up degrading the dewpoint of the gas.
It is not essential to use dry nitrogen, you can also use dry air. The importance is that the gas is dry.
In order to extend the life of the purge, it is possible to fit NV Desiccators that fit into the purge screw hole, these can be supplied with M4, M5 or M6 threads.
