MANPADS & Air Defence Missile Launcher Humidity Protection
Man-Portable Air Defence Systems (MANPads) are a key defence against aircraft in todays world. These surface to air missile systems use guided technology that is susceptible to moisture and therefore needs protecting from the external environmental conditions it will be exposed too.
Humidity Indicators and Static Desiccators are used in the guidance electronics and optics in order to maintain a level of humidity that will protect the equipment during its service life. These devices use colour change indicating paper to advise when the desiccant inside needs changing.
Not only it is important to protect the electronics within the guidance system but also the launch tube electronics as well. It is very common for the desiccator to be mounted in the cap of the launch tube, thus being expelled seconds before the missile is launched. These Static Desiccators can then be recovered and refilled for re-use.
For launch tubes that are more susceptible to pressure, an Automatic Breather Valve can be fitted to enable the system to be air transported.
